Gondolin was described as this - "Now the streets of Gondolin were paved with stone and wide, kerbed with marble, and fair houses and courts amid gardens of bright flowers were set about the ways, and many towers of great slenderness and beauty builded of white marble and carved most marvelously rose to the heaven. The city stood for nearly 400 years until it was betrayed to Morgoth by Maeglin, Turgon's nephew, and sacked shortly thereafter by the Dark Lord's forces. Feeling secure behind his city's strong walls, Turgon ignored the warning. Years later, Huor's son Tuor came to Gondolin with a warning from Ulmo: to depart before the city was destroyed. Later in the Nírnaeth Arnoediad, Turgon led his army to the aid of his brother Fingon, and escaped the ensuing defeat with his army thanks to the sacrifice of Húrin and Huor.Įagles bearing Huor and Húrin to the city, by Donato Giancola It was forbidden to leave Gondolin, but Turgon sent forth messengers including Voronwë to seek the Valar's aid in the wars against Morgoth, to no avail. After it was completed in FA 116, he took with him to dwell in the hidden city his entire people in Nevrast - almost a third of the Ñoldor - as well as nearly three quarters of the northern Sindar. There Turgon decided to found a great city that would be protected by the mountains and hidden from the Dark Lord Morgoth.įor nearly seventy-five years, Turgon and his people built Gondolin in secret. In the middle of the vale there was a steep hill which was called Amon Gwared. Within the Encircling Mountains just west of Dorthonion and east of the river Sirion, lay a round level plain with sheer walls on all sides and a ravine and tunnel leading out to the southwest known as the Hidden Way. Under this divine guidance, Turgon travelled from his kingdom in Nevrast and found the vale in FA 53. Eagles bearing Húrin into Gondolin's concealed valley, by Alan LeeĪs recounted in The Silmarillion, the Vala Ulmo, the Lord of Waters, revealed the location of the Vale of Tumladen to the Noldorin Lord Turgon in a dream around the year FA 50.

Simplif圓D – Best Slicer for Professionals It’s free, too, and Creality pumps out regular updates to keep it spick-and-span. No need to hunt down and download installation files for the latest version.Īnother major benefit of using Creality Slicer is that the stripped-back UI and functionality offer a gentle introduction to slicing software for beginners than Cura.Īdditionally, unlike Cura, Creality Slicer includes well-tuned templates for the Ender 3 in all its incarnations, including the Ender 3 V2 and S1.įrom our experience, these pre-set profiles work great, especially if you’ve snapped up a factory-fresh Ender 3 and just want to get printing without diving into the settings.Ĭreality Slicer is very much the beginner’s slicer, an easy stepping stone to assimilate the fundamentals before shifting to a more powerful and customizable slicer for Ender 3 like Cura or PrusaSlicer. However, Creality Slicer’s biggest advantage when printing with an Ender 3 is that it comes on the microSD that ships with the printer. The feature set and variety of tweakable settings broadly match Cura’s. It’s designed to work with Creality printers, including the Ender 3, but the program is a customized, less complex version of Cura. Operating System Compatibility: Windows, macOSĬompared to Cura, Creality Slicer is somewhat of a hard sell. The options don’t stop there, either, thanks to a thriving add-on marketplace, with plugins (many of them community-generated = free) covering everything from Blender integration to custom supports. You can dial in virtually every aspect of the Ender 3’s printing process. These cover infills, retraction, support generation, first-layer adhesion, print speed, and cooling, to name a few. Should you want to customize, there are hundreds of settings to tinker your way to a perfect print. If you’re running the Ender 3 V2 or S1, a quick visit to the Ender 3 Reddit, and you’ll find no shortage of recommended settings/profiles from experienced users. In recent years, however, the discovery of a memoir by a Syrian named Ḥannā Diyāb cast doubt on the idea that Galland invented the tale. Galland claimed to have heard it firsthand from a Syrian storyteller, but claiming your original story came from an exotic faraway source is a common literary device. ![]() ![]() The tale of Aladdin is born from a hodgepodge of cultural influences - each with an Orientalist viewpointĪladdin had no known source before French writer Antoine Galland stuck it into his 18th-century translation of 1001 Nights. But in fact, Aladdin isn’t a traditional folktale it has a different history, and it’s one that still causing controversy today. Most people think that the story of Aladdin comes from the original 1001 Nights tales, which is a collection of traditional Middle Eastern and Asian folklore. The Council on American-Islamic Relations issued a press release earlier this week asking reviewers and critics to acknowledge that the “Aladdin myth is rooted by racism, Orientalism and Islamophobia” and to “address concerns about racial and religious stereotypes perpetuated by the Disney film.” The new film has, for the most part, managed to shirk much of its inspiration’s exoticism and cultural inaccuracies, but despite Ritchie’s clear efforts to deliver a more respectful version of Aladdin, it may not be enough to satisfy many of its detractors. Although the original movie was a critically acclaimed masterpiece, it was also dripping in Orientalism and harmful racist depictions of Arab culture. The production, helmed by Guy Ritchie, had a hefty amount of cultural baggage to overcome, and has been dogged by controversy and skepticism over its premise and execution since before filming even began.Īll the backlash isn’t entirely the 2019 film’s fault. Disney’s live-action Aladdin, a remake of its 1992 animated film, has finally arrived in theaters, and on one level, it’s something of an achievement. Some people are just more aware of the space they’re taking up in other people’s lives,” Rayl says. She just can’t promise she’ll fix your coworker who ignores every new status update and every UI tweak Slack might try to help you gain time back in your day. Still, there’s nothing less fun than being spammed with non-urgent messages when you’re trying to Severance yourself out of work mode, and Slack knows this. Put another way, Slack might just be a little more … fun. The one thing Teams lacks is Slack’s full embrace of that emoji life in your status updates. Going out of office for a while? You can set an auto-email response in Outlook, and that status update will automatically port over to Teams. When you put up a status update in Teams indicating you don’t want to be bothered, you can check a box that says, “Show when people message me.” This means that as a person is composing their plausibly intrusive message, they’ll see your status, front and center, first. A “landing page” within your work chat app? Just go to the Files tab in Teams and create a new Microsoft Word doc. And secondly, Teams is built on Microsoft’s 365 software suite, which means it’s integrated with a whole bunch of other apps. Firstly, because Teams has more than 270 million monthly active users. ![]() When it comes to modern Away Messages, though, Microsoft Teams may have Slack beat. They also don’t offer a lot of context, and this is what Rayl has been thinking deeply about over the past several months. Still, Slack statuses lack big signage and bold lettering. Statuses appear mostly as emoji, decodable at a glance, and show more info when you hover your cursor over a colleague’s name. On Slack, your “Away Message” is called your Slack status. Rayl, inadvertently or not, is making a case for better Away Messages-a note that enhances the green dot and everything it confers. If your green dot is on and you get a DM and don’t it’s like, what’s the matter?” But I know that at a lot of companies, that’s just not acceptable. When it’s a non-urgent message, and she’s in the middle of something else, she quickly ascertains that “they can hear from me tomorrow. I think the green dot is very harmful.” Rayl admits she’s someone who will let a direct message from a colleague go unaddressed for a day. “I still regret that we added the green dot,” Rayl says. I wanted to ask Rayl if this was a user interface problem or a human problem.īut first: the green dot. ![]() But everyone seems to ignore them in Slack. Apps like Slack and Microsoft Teams have some way to tell others that we’re “away,” unavailable, leave me alone. Back in May, I wrote a rant in WIRED about how we need to revisit Away Messages, the kind born of AOL Instant Messenger back in the 1990s and early 2000s. We were talking about Away Messages, those modern-day versions of out-to-lunch signs that tell people, even if you’re still online, that you’re not available. And nothing has been normal about the past few years, during which a crushing pandemic ended up being a boon for companies that make remote-work software.īut Rayl and I weren’t meeting to discuss Slack’s ginormous valuation. This is a typical Silicon Valley turducken: Tiny gaming company pivots to sticky, real-time messaging app, then gets acquired by sales-tracking software behemoth for nearly $28 billion. ![]() Rayl and I met up in San Francisco just a few weeks before Slack was set to reveal new features at the giant Dreamforce conference, which is hosted by Salesforce, which now owns Slack. She’s been at the workplace software company since the early days, back when it was a bitsy gaming company called Tiny Speck. Rayl is the senior vice president of product at Slack. That’s the green dot in Slack, the one that signals to everyone in your workspace that you’re available. Ali Rayl has her qualms about the green dot. |
